All the latest action from the quarter-final in Ulsan.

90 mins (+3): Germany squander two good chances at the end but they have done enough to progress to a seventh World Cup semi-final.

For the USA, there is pride in defeat - they reached the last eight for the first time since 1930, advancing the cause of football in the USA.

89 mins: Tony Sanneh leaps highest but narrowly misses the target with his header. It may be the USA's last chance.

86 mins: Germany live dangerously at the back for a brief moment but spring a quick counter-attack only to be denied by a diving Brad Friedel.

84 mins: Claudio Reyna flicks in a clever free-kick and Tony Sanneh spurns a good opportunity, missing the target with a free header.

82 mins: Winning his 159th cap, Cobi Jones is trying to spark the fading US attack but Germany are standing firm.

78 mins: Landon Donovan makes another promising run but his cross lacks depth and the chance passes.

74 mins: Germany break and Oliver Neuville shapes a shot from the edge of the area that floats high over Brad Friedel's bar.

70 mins: The cards are beginning to fly and there are now three US players who would miss the semi-final should the USA make it that far.

68 mins: Pace is the USA's biggest threat and they are winning their share of free-kicks, but they need to do better with their final ball if they hope to score.

64 mins: Claudio Reyna almost foils German plans by spectacularly half-volleying an Oliver Kahn clearance from the perimeter of the centre circle. His shot floats just wide with Kahn stranded.

62 mins: Germany are looking to lock up the midfield using Jens Jeremies and Dietmar Hamann to stifle the creative impact of US skipper Claudio Reyna.

58 mins: Brian McBride surprisingly makes way for Clint Mathis, as US coach Bruce Arena shuffles his pack in search of an equaliser. Jens Jeremies comes on for Germany in place of Bernd Schneider.

55 mins: America has high expectations of Landon Donovan and they seem well founded. The lightning-quick striker makes a brilliant turn and gets in a low, skidding shot that fails to trouble Oliver Kahn.

53 mins: The USA have made a positive start to the half. Tony Sanneh knocks in another tempting ball for Brian McBride, who is making a menace of himself up front.

49 mins: The Americans are pushing on and they win a corner which Berhalter flicks goalwards. Torsten Frings appears to handle on the line but the USA's penalty appeal is turned down.

1332 BST The second half kicks off with Germany - unfancied before the start of the World Cup - 45 minutes from another semi-final.

45 mins (+1) Scotland's Hugh Dallas blows for half-time, with Germany back in control of this quarter-final after a shaky start.

42 mins: The USA are rattled and Eddie Pope and Eddie Lewis pick up bookings. From another probing cross, Miroslav Klose heads against the foot of Brad Friedel's post.

39 mins: Christian Ziege whips in an excellent free-kick and Michael Ballack makes up for his earlier miss with a clinical headed finish.

37 mins: At the other end, the ball breaks for Eddie Lewis who strikes his shot powerfully but straight at Oliver Kahn.

36 mins: The unusually quiet Michael Ballack wriggles free in the US penalty area but heads wide from a corner with the goal at his mercy.

34 mins: Miroslav Klose - scorer of five goals in this World Cup - is being well marshalled by the US defence.

30 mins: The pace of Landon Donovan stretches the German defence again, but he squanders half a chance when one-on-one with Oliver Kahn, who is winning his 50th cap for his country.

24 mins: Eddie Lewis clips in a dangerous free-kick, which defender Gregg Berhalter heads over the German bar.

20 mins: A better passage of play from Germany comes to a wasteful end when Oliver Neuville glances his header well wide of US keeper Brad Friedel's goal.

17 mins: Landon Donovan goes on a mazy run and hits a powerful shot just wide of the post with Oliver Kahn at full stretch.

13 mins: Eddie Lewis is involved again, breaking down the left flank and almost teeing up Brian McBride in the box. This has been a bright opening spell for the USA.

10 mins: The Americans' first set-piece chance is a disappointment. Eddie Lewis shoots high and wide of Oliver Kahn's goal from 30 yards.

8 mins: Germany press forwards and win another corner. It is headed out as far as Oliver Neuville, who has had a bright start and fires just wide.

5 mins: Oliver Neuville whips in the first good cross of the game, and wins a corner which the USA easily clear.

4 mins: An even opening as the USA show that they are not in Ulsan simply to make up the numbers.

1230 BST: Scottish referee Hugh Dallas gets the game under way. The USA are chasing an unexpected place in the World Cup semi-finals, but all of Germany expects a win for Rudi Voeller's men.

The German team are wearing black arm bands for Fritz Walter, who captained West Germany to the 1954 World Cup and died this week. Both teams observe a minute's silence.

United States: Brad Friedel, Frankie Hejduk, Gregg Berghalter, Tony Sanneh, Pablo Mastroeni, Eddie Pope, John, O'Brien, Eddie Lewis, Claudio Reyna (capt), Landon Donovan, Brian McBride
