Germany v USA key battles
Germany striker Miroslav Klose and United States captain Claudio Reyna
Klose and Reyna: Key players for their countries
Germany v USA | Quarter-final

Live on BBC Radio Five Live

BBC Sport Online sees how Germany and USA players compare ahead of their World Cup quarter-final.

Oliver Kahn v Brad Friedel

German captain Kahn is widely regarded as the finest goalkeeper in the world.

He will be up against Blackburn's Friedel, who has arguably been the best keeper at the World Cup.

Friedel has already made two superb penalty saves to keep the United States in the tournament, enhancing his reputation in the process.

The US number one has been in commanding form, dominating his area at set-pieces and showing excellent agility.

Friedel's counterpart Kahn remains as reliable as ever.

An excellent shot-stopper and imposing figure, the Bayern Munich keeper does not take kindly to defeat and will do his utmost to ensure Germany make it to the semi-finals.

Sebastian Kehl v Landon Donovan

These two bright young stars will be vying for the limelight on Friday.

Kehl has been one of Germany's few plus points in recent months and is a major reason for their impressive defensive record at the World Cup.

His tackling is excellent and his speed should nullify the pace of Donovan.

The American has caught the eye with his intelligent and pacy runs into the opposition area.

The United States striker has scored twice - against Poland and Mexico - and is unlucky not to have added to his tally.

Donovan can also drop deep and Kehl will have to be on his guard to avoid any unwanted surprises.

Michael Ballack v Claudio Reyna

Germany's most influential outfield player, Michael Ballack has been somewhat of a disappointment in the World Cup so far.

The rising star of German football, who is Bayern Munich-bound, has failed to make the impact many expected him to.

The elegant midfielder has yet to dictate a game for Germany as he did to such devastating effect for Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League.

But he could be saving his best for when it counts most.

Sunderland midfielder Claudio Reyna is the man most likely to be asked to shackle Ballack.

After missing the USA's opening game against Portugal through injury, Reyna's return to the side has bolstered Bruce Arena's midfield.

Reyna is full of running, showing great tenacity and rarely allowing his opponents space.

He is also a dead-ball specialist and could pose a threat to the German goal, making this midfield battle a fascinating one.

Miroslav Klose v Eddie Pope

Miroslav Klose has been a revelation for Germany and is the joint leading scorer at the World Cup.

He headed a hat-trick past Saudi Arabia in Germany's opener and added to his tally with goals against the Republic of Ireland and Cameroon.

Germany have been calling out for a reliable striker for a few years and in Klose may have found the answer.

His clever link-up play could pose the United States all kinds of problems and Eddie Pope will have to be at his most alert to thwart the Kaiserslautern striker.

Pope is strong in the air - in both boxes - and despite losing some of his pace, has improved his overall defensive play.
