Clockwatch: Germany 8-0 Saudi Arabia

Have your say in Match Talk

93 mins: The final whistle blows to prevent further damage to Saudi Arabia's goal difference. On this showing it will not matter. Germany's emphatic victory will not tell coach Rudi Voller much about his team's World Cup credentials.

92 mins: From the resulting free-kick, Bernd Schneider curls in his first international goal.
Germany 8-0 Saudi Arabia

90 mins: Three more minutes of misery will have to be endured by Saudi Arabia. To compound their agony Mohammed Noor is shown the yellow card.

86 mins: Abdulaziz Al-Khathran slashes a shot wide of Oliver Kahn's goal, mirroring the unerring inaccuracy of his side's tackling.

84 mins: The embarrassment continues for Saudi Arabia as Oliver Bierhoff toe-pokes the ball beyond Mohammed Al-Deayea's despairing dive.
Germany 7-0 Saudi Arabia

83 mins: Dietmar Haman needlessly picks up a caution following a clumsy challenge.

80 mins: A seventh German goal is prevented by the feet of Mohammed Al-Deayea. The keeper does well to keep out Michael Ballack's shot.

77 mins: Germany replace Miroslav Klose with Oliver Neuville, while Saudi Arabia's Abdullah Al-Jamaancomes on for Mohammed Al-Khojali.

73 mins: With Saudi Arabia utterly failing to deal with crosses of any kind, Thomas Linke takes full advantage to score his first international goal. The pattern is familiar - a lofted pass into the area, a header, a goal.
Germany 6-0 Saudi Arabia

69 mins: Miroslav Klose completes his hat-trick, nodding down and beyond a static Mohammed Al-Deayea.
Germany 5-0 Saudi Arabia

66 mins: Oliver Bierhoff, who will retire from international football after the World Cup, comes on for Carsten Jancker.

62 mins: Jens Jeremies tries his luck from distance. His strike blazes high and wide.

58 mins: The tempo of the game has dropped substantially as Germany, assured of the points, play at a canter.

53 mins: Torsten Frings is felled by Abdulaziz Al-Khathran, but the referee waves away Germany's penalty appeals.

47 mins: Germany replace Carsten Ramelow with Jens Jeremies. Saudi Arabia make a double substitution. Khamis Alowairan Al-Dosari and Alwaked Al-Shahrani make way for Abdulaziz Al-Khathran and Ibrahim Suwayyed Al-Shahrani.

46 mins: Carsten Jancker adds his name to the score-sheet, firing low past Mohammed Al-Deayea. Again, the Saudi marking is non-existent.
Germany 4-0 Saudi Arabia

43 mins: Christian Ziege is cautioned for a lunge on Ahmed Dukhi.

40 mins: Facing little resistance, Germany increase their lead through yet another header in the box. This time Michael Ballack provides the finishing touch. Germany 3-0 Saudi Arabia

37 mins: Bernd Schneider twists and turns his way into space but, for once, a German head fails to connect with a cross delivered into the Saudi penalty area.

31 mins: Saudi Arabia seem unable to compete with Germany physically and are being carved open time and again.

29 mins: Saudi Arabia get behind the German defence for the first time and force a corner.

25 mins: Good work from Michael Ballack on the left flank presents Miroslav Klose with another scoring chance. He makes no mistake, heading past the stranded Mohammed Al-Deayea.
Germany 2-0 Saudi Arabia

20 mins: Germany deservedly take the lead as Miroslav Klose nets with a diving header.
Germany 1-0 Saudi Arabia

17 mins: There is little respite for Saudi Arabia in the opening exchanges. Germany are dominating possession and Michael Ballack is next to strike at goal. He curls his shot wide when he should have hit the target at least.

15 mins: Miroslav Klose tests Mohammed Al-Deayea with a low shot. The keeper dives to his right and holds on the ball well.

14 mins: Germany are exploiting their aerial superiority and Miroslav Klose is next to head goalwards, but again he is off-target with his effort.

11 mins: The dome-shaped stadium is producing an unfamiliar atmosphere, with the crowd noise undulating between almost silent and very noisy.

8 mins: A misunderstanding in the Saudi backline gifts Carsten Jancker a goalscoring opportunity. He slides the ball home, but the referee disallows the strike and awards a free-kick for an earlier foul.

7 mins: A chipped cross from Christian Ziege finds the giant figure of Carsten Jancker, whose presence is causing problems. His header lacks accuracy and floats by the upright.

2 mins: Carsten Jancker uses his strength to good effect, holding off the Saudi defence to work his way into a shooting position. However, he fires his effort wide of the goal.

1230 BST: The second Group E match gets underway as Saudi Arabia kick off.

Germany's influential midfielder Michael Ballack has shaken off injury to take his place in the starting line-up. As expected, Carsten Jancker and Miroslav Klose lead the attack.

Saudi Arabia's goalkeeper Mohammed al-Deayea makes his 169th international appearance, leaving him one short of the record held by Mexico's Claudio Suarez.
