Pakistan flops fined

Shoaib Akhtar Members of Pakistan's World Cup squad have been fined half their earnings from the tournament following their dismal performances.

Pakistan were knocked out in the first round and only managed victories against minnows Namibia and the Netherlands.

Waqar Younis was stripped of his captaincy after the tournament and was dropped, along with seven other senior players, from next month's one-day tournament in Sharjah.

"This was an agreement signed before the World Cup and the players agreed to performance-based terms and conditions," Pakistan Cricket Board spokesman Samiul Hasan said.

"The agreement was that if they failed to go beyond the preliminary rounds, they would face 50% deductions from their total earnings from the tournament."

The PCB first imposed a system of fines of up to 20% of match earnings after the side were thrashed 3-0 by Australia in a Test series last October and crashed to record low innings scores of 53 and 59.

Waqar, who was then captain, threw his weight behind the system.

"I think it will bear positive results and be a great motivation for the players to thwart a defeat and always go for the win," he said at the time.
