Martyn relishes career high

Martyn and Ponting were superb

An emotional Damien Martyn spoke of his relief after playing a starring role in Australia's World Cup win over India.

Martyn was forced to watch on from the dressing room when his team-mates won the title in 1999.

But he erased those memories with an unbeaten 88 as Australia amassed a record 359 for two.

"This is one of the best moments in my career," said Martyn, who played in the final despite suffering from a broken finger.

"I was a spare batsman in 1999 and the last four years have seen a lot of hard work since then.

"Leading up to the game there were doubts about my injury and there was nervous tension.

"The last four years there has been a lot of hard work done by a lot of people."

Record stand

Martyn shared in a World Cup final record stand of 234 runs with skipper Ricky Ponting, who hit an unbeaten 140.

Martyn said Australia were determined to set an imposing target after being put in to bat.

"Ricky batted fantastically and it was great to build a partnership with him," he said.

"The aim was to set a big total batting first and then come out and bowl well.

"We have done some hard yards in this tournament, and it is very emotional."

The right-hander paid tribute to the Australian fans who supported the team throughout the tournament.

"Thanks to all the Australians who have come out and supported us all the way through," he said.

"It has all come good and it is a fantastic win for all Australians - and they should be very proud."
