Waqar was shown the door after Pakistan's poor World Cup
Waqar Younis has been made a scapegoat for Pakistan's World Cup failure, according to the team's former coach Richard Pybus.
Waqar was stripped of the captaincy by Pakistan cricket bosses on Wednesday and replaced by 34-year-old wicket-keeper Rashid Latif.
"In the circumstances, Waqar did an incredible job keeping the team together," Pybus told the BBC Sport website.
Pybus stepped down as coach after Pakistan failed to reach the second phase of the tournament.
He felt Waqar had been badly let down by certain players who should have been held accountable.
"There was a general lack of desire to go out and fight and I doubt if there is anything that Waqar could have done to change that," Pybus added.
English-born Pybus suggested batsman Younis Khan as a possible future captain when Latif's time in charge comes to an end.
"I can see Younis Khan taking over in time," Pybus said.
"He is a thoughtful, highly professional cricketer who expects others to maintain the standards that he sets himself.
"He is a strong, principled man and I know that if he gets the job at a future date he will have laid down the ground rules first.
"He certainly will not tolerate prima donnas."
