To be ranked among the world's top 10 batsmen in a career spanning over a decade is a superb achievement and both Jayasuriya's Test and one-day records are outstanding.
And his recent one-day form is sensational.
The Sri Lankan skipper scored two tons and a 99 in 10 days of action in early January.
In total he has rattled up more than 8,500 runs in just over 275 innings.
Jayasuriya is also a very good spin bowler and has picked up in excess of 200 wickets in the shorter game.
He has captained the side since the last World Cup and came to international prominence at the 1996 tournament, when his policy of all-out attack in the opening overs helped Sri Lanka to overall victory.
