New Zealand v Zimbabwe: over-by-over

Result: New Zealand 253-4 (47.2 overs) beat Zimbabwe 252-7 (50 overs) by six wickets

Nathan Astle picks up a century as New Zealand clinch a vital victory in Bloemfontein.

Astle finished unbeaten on 102 and was ably supported by Chris Cairns, who scored 54 in a 121-run partnership.

Earlier Zimbabwe recovered from 106 for six to score 252, with Heath Streak and Tatenda Taibu both hitting half-centuries.

48th over: Harris wins the game with a big hit for four.

47th over: Astle clinches a one-bounce four to pick up a well-worked century off 122 balls.

46th over: Douglas Hondo takes over with the ball only for Harris to twice send it flying to the boundary rope for four. Taibu later nearly pulls off an inspired run out but Astle charges in in time.

45th over: Astle is joined at the crease by Chris Harris and the pair notch up a further five runs.

44th over: Astle's innings nearly comes to a close in dramatic fashion when Ervine and Taibu combine to run him out. But television replays show he just grounds his bat. The next ball Astle lofts it high but it lands out of danger. In a dramatic over, Cairns reaches his half-century with a huge six over mid-wicket before being bowled by Ervine.

40th over: Blignaut concedes just two runs as Zimbabwe retain hope they can keep the Black Caps at bay.

39th over: The returning Streak bamboozles Astle but the inside edge beats the stumps and the keeper and runs for four.

38th over: Cairns drives through extra cover for four as the required run-rate nudges six runs per over.

37th over: Cairns scampers through for a quick single and is short of his ground at the non-striker's end when the shy at the stumps misses. Grant Flower's fine spell comes to an end.

36th over: New Zealand are in no hurry as the batsmen take four runs from Blignaut's over.

35th over: More admirable bowling from Grant Flower as just one run is added to the score.

34th over: Cairns makes Zimbabwe pay, punishing Ervine for successive fours past square-leg and straight down the ground.

33rd over: Cairns skies high over mid-wicket as three fieldsmen converge on the chance, but sub Marillier drops the chance.

26th over: Cairns scampers for two and makes his ground at the non-striker's end.

25th over: Flower zips through his over, conceding just two runs as the batsmen look to consolidate.

24th over: Whittall takes up the attack, replacing a tired Blignaut. The batsmen take four runs.

23rd over: Flower's third over costs five runs as New Zealand content themselves with ones and twos.

22nd over: A blinding piece of fielding by Ebrahim at backward point denies Cairns sure runs. The batsman drives a yorker which beats mid-on for four.

21st over: Another fine over from Grant Flower concedes just one run.

20th over: Blignaut strikes as Styris tries to clear the man at deep mid-wicket but holes out to sub fielder Friend for 13. New Zealand: 97-3

19th over: Grant Flower replaces Hondo, bowling a wide but going for only four runs in the over.

18th over: Whittall makes a mess of a dive stop at mid-wicket but recovers to collect the ball just inside the rope, preventing a boundary.

17th over: Hondo keeps a good line but cannot prevent four singles in the over.

16th over: Styris leans back, punching Blignaut through the covers for four.

15th over: Hondo and team-mates rise for a lbw shout but Styris gets outside the line of off-stump and survives.

14th over: Blignaut makes a crucial breakthrough, trapping Fleming leg before for 46 with a zippy inswinger. New Zealand: 72-2

13th over: Hondo is brought back into the attack, but Astle welcomes him with a boundary past square leg and another through the covers.

12th over: Blignaut's second over is a sharp one that costs just three runs.

11th over: Streak comes around the wicket but Fleming hits him for three consecutive boundaries.

10th over: Astle wafts at a shot and completely misses, Fleming hits his seventh boudary of the innings.

9th over: Fleming clips Streak off his pads for four, just evading the outstretched arms of short mid-wicket. Another four follows at the end of the over.

8th over: Hondo follows up his strike with a miserly over that costs just two runs.

7th over: Astle takes on Olonga's arm but survives as the sub fielder misses his shy st the stumps.

6th over: Zimbabwe break through as McMillan drives wildly at Hondo and edges behind to Taibu. New Zealand: 27-1

5th over: Another boundary for Fleming as Streak is driven through mid-wicket.

4th over: Hondo angles one into McMillan and raps him on the pads, but height issues give the batsman the benefit of the doubt. Fleming on-drives for four to finish the over brightly for New Zealand.

3rd over: Streak strays onto Fleming's pads and is lofted over wide mid-wicket for a boundary.

2nd over: Hondo pitches short and wide to McMillan and is treated accordingly, driven over the covers for four.

1st over: Streak beats McMillan's outside edge with the first ball, a nice outswinger.


50th over: Brilliant hitting by Streak and Ervine batters the New Zealanders as 26 runs come off the final over.

49th over: The 50-partnership comes up in only 30 balls as 13 runs come off the over.

48th over: Streak hits Harris for six off a no ball, and repeats the feat a ball later, to notch up an unbeaten 50, as 23 runs come from Harris' final over.

47th over: Streak hits a shot in the air but it bounces safely before Cairns.

46th over: Streak gets three leg-byes and a mis-field by Adams hands Zimbabwe another two runs.

45th over: Ervine comes to the crease for his first innings of the World Cup and is off the mark with a single.

44th over: Taibu falls leg before to an ill-conceived shovel shot. Zimbabwe: 174-7

43rd over: Taibu notches his first one-day half-century with a turned nurdle past square. Streak follows up by cutting Vettori for four.

40th over: Taibu's eyes light up as Harris offers a long hop, but the batsman cannot beat the fielder at deep square-leg. A single then sees him register a personal best score in one-dayers, 37.

39th over: Streak survives a loud lbw appeal before lofting Vettori over extra cover for two.

38th over: Harris races through another tidy over, conceding just two runs. Just one boundary has been scored in the last 12 overs.

37th over: Vettori keeps things tight but does not threaten to break through.

36th over: Taibu attempts the shovel sweep but fails dismally. The ball fortuitously evades the bat on its way to the 'keeper.

35th over: Taibu sweeps Vettori nicely but cannot beat short fine-leg and manages just a single. Streak cuts through extra cover and gets two.

34th over: Harris appeals for leg before, but Streak appears to have been struck outside the line of off-stump and survives.

33rd over: Oram blemishes his copybook, over-pitching to Taibu and being dispatched to the square-leg fence. He finsihes his spell with figures of 10-4-28-1.

32nd over: A fine over from Harris restricts Taibu and costs the Black Caps just two runs.

31st over: Oram appeals for an lbw on Taibu but the ball was going down the leg-side.

30th over: Taibu sweeps Harris but there is not enough power in the shot and he only gets a couple of runs.

29th over: Oram comes on for Bond, hitting the spot immediately to bowl his third maiden.

28th over: Just three singles and a leg-bye carries on a very tidy spell from Vettori.

27th over: Bond finishes his spell, returning no wicket for 37.

26th over: Vettori keeps things tight, conceding just one run.

25th over: Bond continues but cannot break through for his first wicket.

24th over: More poor cricket from Zimbabwe as Blignaut is run-out at the non-striker's end. Umpire Koertzen chooses not to refer to the third umpire but replays suggest he should have. Zimbabwe: 106-6

23rd over: The Zimbabwe 100 comes up with a single but Zimbabwe have much more to do to get out of trouble.

22nd over: Adams overpitches to Flower and pays the price, going for successive fours through the off-side. But the batsman falls for 38 to a superb direct hit from Astle at mid-off. Zimbabwe: 98-5

21st over: Bond comes back into the attack as Fleming goes for the jugular. Mid-off is brought into a short catching position but Taibu drives and beats the fielder for four.

20th over: Frustration for the Black Caps as Taibu picks the gap at second slip, splitting the catching fieldsmen for four.

19th over: Taibu plays Cairns past point for three as a fine piece of fielding by Vettori saves a boundary.

18th over: Just one run comes from Oram's over as Zimbabwe reel from their triple blow.

17th over: Zimbabwe are in serious trouble as Wishart edges Cairns behind for a duck. Zimbabwe: 65-4

16th over: Grant Flower soon falls, top-edging Oram to the waiting hands of Cairns at fine-leg. Zimbabwe: 63-3

15th over: Cairns hits back to snare the wicket of Wishart, caught in slip by Styris for 30. Zimbabwe: 59-2

14th over: Flower gets in on the act, driving Oram through the covers and beating the diving Vettori to the boundary.

13th over: Bond's six-over spell comes to an end as the out-of-form Cairns comes into the attack. Wishart flogs him through mid-wicket for successive fours.

12th over: Oram cannot make it three maidens in a row as sevens runs are conceded in a good over for Zimbabwe.

11th over: Bond pays for pitching too short as Wishart pulls expertly to the fence.

10th over: Wishart again approaches Oram warily as another maiden is clocked up for the all-rounder.

9th over: Bond beats the inside edge of Flower with a perfectly pitched ball swung away from the left-hander. Flower then edges a similar ball wide over third slip for four.

8th over: Oram replaces Adams in the attack, starting with a maiden.

7th over: Wishart flicks Bond through mid-wicket for three on the last ball of the over.

6th over: Adams struggles to control the swinging ball, bowling two wides in the over.

5th over: Bond continues to angle the ball away to the left-handed Flower. Harris at point saves a certain boundary but the batsman then splits the covers for his first four.

4th over: Wishart steers a thick edge through the vacant third-slip region for a single before pulling Adams over mid-wicket for four.

3rd over: Bond continues to swing the ball in at a fierce pace. Wishart unknowingly edges past square leg for two.

2nd over: Adams opens with a wide that runs to the fence before Ebrahim plays onto his stumps for a first-ball duck. Zimbabwe: 5-1

1st over: Bond's first ball is a wicked off-cutter that Wishart unwittingly leaves. The rest of the over follows suit and there is a surprising amount of movement in the pitch.
