South Africa v Sri Lanka: over-by-over
Result: South Africa 229-6 (45 overs) tie with Sri Lanka 268-9 (50 overs) D/L method

Hosts South Africa are out of the World Cup after a dramatic rain-decided tie against Sri Lanka.

The players were called off the pitch five overs from the end of South Africa's innings, with the match eventually decided by the Duckworth-Lewis method.

Marvan Atapattu was the star of the game, hitting 124 off 129 balls.

46th over: The umpires confer and the players are told to head for the pavilion.

45th over: The umpires call for wet weather gear with South Africa needing to score 53 off 36 balls. Klusener does not look comfortable but flicks to fine leg for four. The rain is teeming down as Boucher thrashes a big six.

44th over: Arnold is recalled to the attack, a risky ploy with Klusener now at the crease. A yorker hits him on the toe but Arnold's appeal is rejected. The rain starts to fall, bringing Duckworth-Lewis into the equation.

43rd over: Murali dramatically runs out Shaun Pollock as he flicks the ball back onto the stumps following a great Sangakkara throw. South Africa 212-6

42nd over: Pollock finds a way past Tillakaratne, winning two runs when none should have been on.

41st over: Muralitharan is brought back on to break up the partnership. But he is swept to the boundary rope by Boucher immediately.

40th over: Pollock finally decides to go after the bowlers. He takes a massive swipe at Jayasuriya and fortunately edges it for four. He nearly drives another four but Vaas halts it with his boot. The 50 stand comes up for the pair after taking 11 runs from the over.

39th over: The singles keep on going but there has been just one boundary in the last 10 overs.

38th over: Boucher lofts Arnold into the outfield. Despite an initial scare, it avoids all the fielders and he picks up two runs. That takes his total to 20.

37th over: The South African batsmen risk a quick single despite the ball going to Muralitharan's hands in the field. His brief fumble, however, allows Boucher easily in.

36th over: A good over from Jayasuriya, who concedes only three runs.

35th over: Boucher mis-reads de Silva's spin, nudges the ball into the air but it falls shy of Sangakkara. A bit of a let-off.

34th over: Boucher bides his time with Jayasuriya before delightfully sweeping the Sri Lankan captain for four. South Africa now require 101 more for victory.

33rd over: Jayasuriya hands the ball back to Vaas in a bid for a quick wicket or two. Vaas fails to get much movement on his return and Pollock and Boucher look relatively content at the crease.

32nd over: Mark Boucher and Shaun Pollock try to halt the tumble of wickets for South Africa. They pick up three more runs in the process.

31st over: Atapattu pulls off a stunning piece of fielding to halt a four at fine leg.

30th over: Dippenaar follows Gibbs rapidly back to the pavilion as the ball comes back at him and lands on his pads. A close decision but he is given out lbw.
South Africa 149-5

29th over: Gibbs is bowled by Murali, a vital wicket for Sri Lanka.
South Africa 149-4

28th over: Some sloppy fielding by Jayawardene gifts South Africa a run. Another follows seconds later, when Gunaratne fails to cut out a single and laughably lets it under his legs for four.

27th over: Gibbs shows a little frustration after temporarily being pinned down. He tries to unleash another big six off Murali but totally misses it.

26th over: Gibbs thinks about careering down the wicket from Jayasuriya's final delivery. But instead he plays it defensively.

25th over: Boeta Dippenaar comes in to face Muralitharan. He picks up a single straight away, while Gibbs nearly edges Murali to Kumar Sangakkara.

24th over: Jayasuriya spins the ball superbly to bowl Kallis, who looks back at his off stump amazed by the amount of turn.
South Africa 124-3

23rd over: Murali looks angered as Gibbs sprints between the wickets to pick up two runs. The leg spinner has yet to find his range.

22nd over: Further spin variation sees Sanath Jayasuriya take the ball. Some quick running puts the pressure on the Sri Lankan fielders.

21st over: Muttiah Muralitharan is finally brought into the bowling attack. Kallis makes contact with aplomb, passing point for four - the first of 11 runs.

20th over: Gibbs records his second six to bring up his half-century. He records a total of 10 off the over.

19th over: New batsman Jacques Kallis and Gibbs virtually pick up a run a ball off Arnold.

18th over: De Silva strikes once again, beating the pad and clipping Kirsten's arm before knocking over his leg stump.
South Africa 91-2

17th over: Russel Arnold brings his turn into the attack. It produces a handful of singles and two edges from Kirsten. Neither are particularly precarious.

16th over: De Silva drops the ball too short for Gibbs and it is deservedly powered to the square leg boundary. The players take time for a drinks break.

15th over: Another Gibbs strike heads skywards, but once again it just avoids the fielder.

14th over: Gibbs hits a four and comes close to losing his wicket with a monstrous mis-hit. It lands just out of the grasp of Jayasuriya in the field.

13th over: Smith's departure has slowed South Africa's attacking style - just one run off Gunaratne's latest over.

12th over: Aravinda de Silva comes on to bowl and strikes with his first ball when Smith hoists it to Gunaratne at deep mid-wicket.
South Africa 65-1

11th over: Gibbs is in tremendous touch, spinning on one foot for yet another leg-side shot to the ropes.

10th over: Gunaratne comes on again after just one Fernando over. A pull to square leg brings up Smith's fifth four. South Africa are now averaging six runs an over.

9th over: Vaas is producing a string of fiery deliveries but none are currently capable of bothering either Gibbs or Smith. Smith picks up the shot of the over, carving a four to the mid-wicket boundary.

8th over: Dilhara Fernando is the first bowling change and his first over brings up an appallingly high 14 easy runs for the batsmen.

7th over: South Africa's openers have launched a strong bid in this run chase and pick up six more runs off Vaas' fourth over thanks to some quick running.

6th over: Gunaratne appeals for lbw against Gibbs but the ball is clearly missing leg stump and his plea is rejected. Gibbs and Smith dash for a leg bye and Smith promptly knocks a well-timed four the next ball.

5th over: Gibbs smashes the ball for six - a stunning shot from not that bad a ball by Vaas.

4th over: Smith follows Gibbs' lead, hitting the ball nice and flat for the first boundary of his innings.

3rd over: Graeme Smith gives away a thick edge but it beats the man at third slip. Gibbs shows him how it is done the next ball, whipping it to fine leg for four.

2nd over: Pulasthi Gunaratne gives Herschelle Gibbs way too much room and is dispatched with disdain to the mid-wicket boundary.

1st over: Chaminda Vaas enjoys some early movement with the ball. He opens with a maiden.

50th over: Muralitharan exposes all three stumps and Kallis hits them to take his third wicket of the innings, before a final-ball run-out spells the end for Chaminda Vaas.
Sri Lanka 266-9

49th over: Pollock strikes in his final over, taking the wicket of Russell Arnold for eight runs.
Sri Lanka 261-7

48th over: Kallis takes his second wicket, dismissing the dangerous Kumar Sangakkara after a good catch by Pollock.
Sri Lanka 258-6

47th over: Brilliant fielding at the boundary rope saves South Africa some runs, but the Sri Lanka total is ticking on.

46th over: Fresh hope for South Africa as De Silva holes out to Graeme Smith off the bowling of Ntini for 73 runs.
Sri Lanka 243-5

45th over: De Silva is cutting loose and another mighty six is the catalyst for another big over for Sri Lanka. But Atapattu's wicket finally falls after a splendid innings of 124.
Sri Lanka 242-4

44th over: Atapattu is living a charmed life and his loose shot falls safely. De Silva then chips in with a blazing six as Ntini is punished heavily on his reintroduction.

43rd over: A much tighter over from Hall reduces Sri Lanka to just five runs off the over.

42nd over: De Silva picks up his half-century with a simple single off Klusener. Sri Lanka go past 200 in the process. Atapattu outhits his team-mate with a one-ball four past mid-off as 12 runs come off the over.

41st over: Zondeki is receiving treatment off the field now and Hall takes his place with the ball. Atapattu gives himself acres of space to swipe the ball to the boundary with punishing effect.

40th over: Kallis is smacked to the boundary as Atapattu hooks with superb timing. South Africa are struggling to contain the Sri Lankans.

39th over: Zondeki stretches midway through his over. He looks to be struggling with a hamstring problem as he is brought on to bowl. Off the last ball of the over he hits another four for his century.

38th over: Ntini produces some exemplary fielding, cutting Atapattu's latest attempted straight drive off Kallis for four.

37th over: Atapattu pulls off arguably the best shot of his innings, smacking the ball to cover. It races to the ropes and the fielder has no chance.

36th over: Sri Lanka have really lifted the run rate in the last four overs, exemplified by a delightful cut by de Silva for four.

35th over: Pollock makes another bowling change, bringing Hall back on. Three singles and a four follow, despite an acrobatic attempted field by Zondeki.

34th over: Atapattu charges down the track and easily clears Graeme Smith at mid-on for four.

33rd over: De Silva appallingly mis-times the ball as Pollock comes back on to bowl. The ball goes high into the air but falls before and between two fielders. A four the next ball brings up the 50 partnership.

32nd over: Interestingly Lance Klusener, in his first over, is bowling off an extremely short run-up, trying to cut the ball into the batsmen.

31st over: Atapattu shakes his head in disgust after nearly being run out by Hall. The players are now taking a drinks break.

30th over: De Silva is showing excellent awareness at the crease and keeps the South African fielders on their toes with strong timing and placement.

29th over: Pollock looks to have got the field settings perfect for Hall. But de Silva finally manages to pierce the off-side with a superb four through the covers.

28th over: Zondeki is deemed too expensive, so Ntini takes over the ball. But five runs still come quite nonchalantly off the over.

27th over: De Silva is already playing a strong role as second fiddle. His tally goes to nine in the process.

26th over: Zondeki is brought on for his second spell. An early lbw appeal against Atapattu is rightly rejected. But minutes later the Sri Lankan opener almost drags the ball onto his stumps. The over proves expensive - seven comes off it.

25th over: South Africa may have looked pedestrian in the field in recent games in this tournament. But some sprightly work from Hall's latest over cuts out two fours.

24th over: Aravinda de Silva is already finding the gaps for the odd single here and there. Atapattu continues with the boundaries to steer his side past 100.

23rd over: Jayawardene charges down the crease and nicks Hall to Boucher. An abysmal swipe as he unnecessarily gifts his wicket.
Sri Lanka 90-3

22nd over: Atapattu's 50 comes up as he nudges the ball to the on-side. Those two runs are the only from the over.

21st over: Andrew Hall enters the attack but it does little to stifle Atapattu. A four and a single take him one shy of his half-century.

20th over: A tidy over from Kallis produces a run apiece from both Sri Lankan batsmen.

19th over: Zondeki produces a good over but one marginally wide delivery is sent crashing over the boundary rope by Atapattu.

18th over: Tillakaratne is out as he edges Kallis to Boucher behind the stumps.
Sri Lanka 77-2

A similar appeal moments later against Mahela Jayawardene is turned down.

17th over: A whipped half-volley past mid-on accounts for boundary number two from Tillakaratne. He then nearly becomes Kirsten's second run-out victim but the South African opener's throw is marginally wide.

16th over: Tillakaratne is beaten for pace but his looping shot dips just short of of Lance Klusener's attempted grasp. The Sri Lankan number three then supremely cuts the ball for four. It brings up the drinks break.

15th over: Having given away 12 runs in his first over, Zondeki drops the pace a little and looks far more assured. A wide is his only indiscretion in the over.

14th over: Jacques Kallis' first over proves much cheaper than Zondeki's. He concedes a solitary single.

13th over: Monde Zondeki joins the bowling attack. Tillakaratne immediately steers him to square leg for a single. Atapattu then smashes the 20-year-old over point for back-to-back fours. A total of 12 runs come off the over.

12th over: A snappy, rising delivery from Ntini is dealt with superbly by Atapattu, who guides it to the mid-wicket boundary. Andrew Hall's chase proves fruitless.

11th over: Tillakaratne is pegged back by Pollock for the entire over. A maiden from the South African captain.

10th over: Hashan Tillakaratne comes to the crease but has yet to face the strike.

9th over: Jayasuriya is run out after a dire mix-up with Atapattu. After continually dithering over a potential single he starts to saunter back and is run out by a direct throw by Gary Kirsten.
Sri Lanka 37-1

8th over: A marginal mis-hit sees an attempted Jayasuriya pull shot fly into the air but land out of danger. Boucher acrobatically takes the ball. An appeal for a catch is turned down.

7th over: The Sri Lankan openers are riding their luck on the quick singles. A Gary Kirsten throw nearly ends Jayasuriya's innings.

6th over: The ball careers for four as Jayasuriya smashes an Ntini delivery into the ground and it bounces over the fielder at extra cover.

5th over: Jayasuriya tries to hook Pollock for four but the ball merely smacks into his helmet. He looks a little shaken. Atapattu just survives another run out attempt.

4th over: Jayasuriya and Atapattu have their first nervy moment when they narrowly avoid being run out by Ntini on a single. Ntini is getting plenty of bounce and movement with the ball.

3rd over: Atapattu unleashes a string of trademark drives to pierce the off-side field for a trio of fours in four balls.

2nd over: Makhaya Ntini shares the new ball with Pollock and unleashes a wide as he tries to find his line and length. He makes amends to come within a whisker of forcing an edge from Sanath Jayasuriya.

1st over: Shaun Pollock beats the bat of Marvan Atapattu with the second ball of the innings. Atapattu gets off the mark with a single two deliveries later.

South Africa: Herschelle Gibbs, Graeme Smith, Gary Kirsten, Jacques Kallis, Boeta Dippenaar, Mark Boucher, Shaun Pollock (captain), Lance Klusener, Andrew Hall, Makhaya Ntini, Monde Zondeki.

Sri Lanka: Sanath Jayasuriya (captain), Marvan Atapattu, Hashan Tillakaratne, Aravinda de Silva, Mahela Jayawardene, Russel Arnold, Kumar Sangakkara, Chaminda Vaas, Muttiah Muralitharan, Dilhara Fernando, Pulasthi Gunaratne.
