Australia's win: over-by-over

Pakistan 228 all out (44.3 overs) lost to Australia 310-8 (50 overs) by 82 runs

Pakistan were comprehensively beaten by Australia in Johannesburg.

Pakistan had reduced Australia to 86-4 at one stage but Andrew Symonds put the defending champions back into the game with an unbeaten 143.

Pakistan lost wickets regularly and in the end succumbed easily.

45th over: The game is over after Waqar Younis is brilliantly caught by McGrath at mid-off to give Harvey his fourth wicket.
Pakistan: 228 all out.

44th over: Lee and Shoaib renew rivalries but Shoaib gets the better of him with four leg-byes after two over-throws.

43rd over: Wasim Akram's fireworks are over after he spoons a catch to Ponting.
Pakistan: 223-9

42nd over: Pakistan are picking up singles but it is not enough as the run rate heads past 13.

41st over: Waqar is off the mark and Wasim hits a boundary off a full toss.

40th over: Waqar Younis comes to the crease but its his team-mate Wasim who has to fend off Gillespie's over.

39th over: Rashid Latif hits Hogg for six but the next ball is bowled to leave Pakistan teetering on the edge of defeat.
Pakistan 201-8.

38th over: Pakistan keep the run-rate ticking over.

37th over: Wasim Akram gets in on the act too, with a huge six.

36th over Rashid Latif takes the fight to Australia with two sixes and a boundary.

35th over: It is all over for Razzaq who is bowled and caught by Brad Hogg. Pakistan 147-7

34th over: Razzaq grabs another four.

33rd over: Razzaq makes a great shot through the covers for a boundary.

32nd over: Razzaq plays down to Gillespie on the third man for two.

31st over: More misery for Pakistan as Khan is caught by Ponting after pulling Hogg's delivery. Pakistan: 125-6

30th over: Khan pulls to Symonds behind square, but an overthrow allows a second run.

29th over: Razzaq waits for the ball to almost pass him before he strikes it toward point for a single.

28th over: New batsman Abdul Razzaq snatches a single against Harvey.

27th over: Younis Khan plays out behind square on the off side to take a couple of runs.

26th over: Youhana, dropped by McGrath at mid-on in the previous over, is not so lucky the next time as Symonds dives full length to his left to catch the Pakistan batsman. Pakistan: 103-5

25th over: Youhana enjoys a narrow escape after being dropped by McGrath.

24th over: Pakistan snatch three runs as their batsmen try to hold out against Harvey's deliveries.

23rd over: Youhana's sweep shot to boundary beats deep backward square easily for four.

22nd over: Hogg is quick in the gully, but fails to prevent a single after throwing and missing the stumps.

21st over: New batsman Younis Khan helps Youhana keep up the Pakistan challenge.

20th over: Elahi makes a crucial mistake, lofting up Ian Harvey's ball for Lee to catch. Pakistan: 81-4

19th over: Elahi survives a run-out scare to hit McGrath straight over his head for four.

18th over: Youhana claims his third boundary with an excellent pull shot through the square leg.

17th over: Elahi beats Hayden in the gully for a single.

16th over: Yousuf Youhana earns a four after beating Maher's dive to his left from mid-off.

15th over: Inzamam finally gets his first boundary, but is easily caught by Gilchrist on the next ball after a classic leg-cutter from McGrath. Pakistan: 49-3

14th over: Inzamam struggles to get to grips with Australia's aggressive bowling.

13th over: Quality over from McGrath for his second maiden.

12th over: Taufeeq edges a pull shot against Brett Lee to set up an easy catch for Brad Hogg. Pakistan: 38-2 Hefty batsman Inzamam-ul-Haq enters the fray.

11th over: Taufeeq looks to have found his feet as he lands a couple of boundaries against McGrath.

10th over: Fielders gasp as Gillespie's ball thuds onto the pads, but iti is not in line, so no appeal.

9th over: Elahi grabs two runs off the back foot, played out to the on side.

8th over: Taufeeq ends the over by smashing Gillespie through the mid-wicket for four.

7th over: Elahi grabs his first four after a pull shot, just in front of square.

6th over: New batsman Salim Elahi settles for three as his beautiful cover drive just fails to reach the boundary.

5th over: McGrath denies Taufeeq to grab a maiden.

4th over: Taufeeq picks up the run-rate with a four, but Afridi's edge is caught by wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist to give Gillespie his first wicket. Pakistan: 9-1

3rd over: Taufeeq takes a couple runs to triple Pakistan's score. The batsmen will have to move up the run-rate if they want to reach the imposing total of 311.

2nd over: Afridi struggles to score as Jason Gillespie bowls a maiden.

1st over: Taufeeq Umar joins Shahid Afridi to replace the injured opener Saeed Anwar. One run is conceded as Taufeeq faces the awesome Glenn McGrath.


50th over: Andrew Symonds is given a standing ovation after his unbeaten 143, the highest international one-day score at the ground.

49th over: Waqar Younis is taken out of the attack after bowling two beamers, just missing Symonds' head. Afridi is brought in to complete the over and Symonds smashes a six.

48th over: Lee's short innings comes to an end as he skies a shot, which is comfortably taken by Inzamam.
Australia: 292-8

47th over: A slower ball from Shoaib confuses Harvey and his sliced shot is caught near the boundary by Waqar Younis.
Australia: 270-7

46th over: The 50-run partnership comes up for Symonds and Harvey .

45th overs: Younis Khan drops Harvey, who then puinishes Shoaib with a four.

44th over: Australia keep up the run rate with another boundary.

43rd over: Symonds denied a four after his pulled shot to the boundary is covered.

42nd over: Symonds keeps the scoreboard ticking over, with Harvey staying as much as possible in the non-striker position.

41st over: Symonds reaches his first ever century in one-day international cricket.

40th over: Symonds steers towards a landmark score as he holds the batting together.

39th over: The reigning champions are now looking more deperate as new batsman Ian Harvey attempts to salvage their position.

38th over: Australia suffer another blow as Younis Khan helps to run-out Brad Hogg. Australia: 216-6

37th over: Symonds looks in control as he grabs his 14th four.

36th over: Brad Hogg's single brings up the Aussie total to 200 with a shot up the ground on the on side.

35th over: Symonds reaches a personal best in one-day internationals, hitting four boundaries in an over.

34th over: Abdul Razzaq saves Pakistan a couple of runs with a desperate block to stop Symonds's shot reach the boundary.

33rd over: Symonds hits another boundary.

32nd over: Symonds grabs his third one-day fifty with an excellent drive through the covers.

31st over: Symonds takes advantage of no-one on the third man boundary to prevent his four.

30th over: Shoaib grabs his first wicket as his ball glances off the toe-end of the bat into the gloves of Taufeeq Umar in the gully. Australia: 146-5

29th over: Wonderful cover drive from Symonds seals a fifth four for the 27-year-old.

28th over: Symonds takes advantage of a poor delivery by Shoaib to grab a four over head of gully.

27th over: Symonds survives an attempted stumping, making it home just in time.

26th over: Ponting reaches his half century with a single off a great cut shot.

25th over: Pakistan go for a change of attack, introducing leg-break bowler Shahid Afridi, who holds Australia tojust two runs in his opening over.

24th over: Ponting continues to lead from the frontline as exploiting gaps to snatch vital runs for Australia.

23rd over: Ponting shows his class, pulling another short delivery from Razzaq behind square leg for four.

22nd over: Right-handed Symonds seems to be feeling his feet more as he hooks to the boundary behind square for four.

21st over: Symonds strikes a ball from Razzaq hard towards cover but Shahid Afridi stops the ball to make sure the Australian collects no runs.

20th over: Symonds looks under pressure at the crease, almost getting run-out by Waqar on the fourth ball.

19th over: Symonds gets his first runs on the board with a four that even a desperate dive from Waqar cannot prevent.

18th over: Razzaq on the fine leg boundary fails to prevent Ponting getting a second run off the fifth ball.

17th over: Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds takes his place at the crease and almost induces an edge from Razzaq's ball to the gasp and excitment of the crowd at the Wanderers.

16th over: Waqar gets his first scalp of the day and a maiden as Maher edges his high-bouncing ball into the gloves of wicketkeeper Rashid Latif. Australia: 86-4

15th over: Ponting plays som his best shots in the innings so far, notching up three boundaries from the over bowled by Abdul Razzaq.

14th over: Maher plays Waqar's delivery off the back foot out behind square leg for a nifty two runs.

13th over: Wasim continues to cause problems for the Australian batsmen, who are held to just a single.

12th over: Left-handed batsman Jimmy Maher attempts to steady Australia after the sudden loss of two wickets in the previous over.

11th over: Another scalp for Wasim Akram as Hayden goes for 27 after being played onto his stumps. Australia: 52-2 But it's a double blow for Australia who lose replacement Damien Martyn on the next ball. Australia: 52-3

10th over: Pakistan put paceman and captain Waqar Younis into the attack. The "Burewala Express" announces his presence with a short wide delivery which forces Hayden to duck.

9th over: Left-hander Hayden grabs two off a leg-bye from Wasim as Australia move at a steady rate.

8th over: Hayden pulls a great shot, which the fine leg fails to cut off before it reaches the boundary for four.

7th over: Ponting grabs a leg-bye four as Shoaib fails to get behind first slip in time to cut off a boundary.

6th over: Australia are moving at an acceptable run-rate of 4.33 at the moment as Hayden and Ponting snatch three runs off Shoaib.

5th over: Hayden finally starting to get stuck in, hitting Wasim's delivery high over mid-on and falling just short of the boundary for four.

4th over: Shoaib is looks in devastating form early on in this classic encounter, holding Australian captain Ricky Ponting and Hayden to just three runs.

3rd over: Australia suffer an early blow as Gilchrist is caught at mid-on after a great catch from Pakistan captain Waqar Younis. Australia: 10-1

2nd over: Shoaib Akhtar announces his presence with a high ball to Hayden. The psychological battle has begun.

1st over: Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden open the batting for Australia against Wasim Akram. Hayden makes a trademark drive through extra cover for four.
