Sri Lanka v NZ: over-by-over

Result: Sri Lanka (272-7) beat New Zealand (225 all out) by 47 runs

Sri Lanka clinch victory at Goodyear Park by 47 runs after dismissing New Zealand for 225.

But Scott Styris manages to upstage Sanath Jayasuriya's scintillating 120 with a spectacular knock of 141 in the losing cause.


46th over Styris hits another six and reaches 141 - the highest-ever individual score at Goodyear Park - before being caught by Vaas. The NZ innings ends on 225.

45th over Styris hits sixes off Muralitharan's first two balls, with the over costing Sri Lanka 15 runs in total.

44th over Tuffey is caught behind off Arnold.

43rd over Styris slog sweeps Murali for six, how New Zealand needed one more batsman to play like him today.

42nd over Adams pulls Arnold aggressively, but straight to sub Mubarak on the mid-wicket fence.

27th over Styris is dropped by Gunaratne on the mid-wicket fence and collects four runs.

23rd over Another calamity for the Kiwis as Vincent spoons a cut shot off Jayasuriya straight to point.

23rd over Cairns's shaky innings finally comes to an end, as he is caught and bowled by de Silva.

21st over De Silva replaces Murali and Styris collects his fifty.

20th over Cairns is beginning to show his match rustiness now with spin on at both ends and is struggling to get the scoring rate moving.

15th over Muralitharan's first over is remarkable only in that umpire Bucknor allows him twice to bowl down leg-isde without calling wides.

12th over Styris really gets into a pull shot off Fernando to hit a big six following a streaky Cairns boundary.

10th over Styris collects a sharp couple of runs down to third man off Gunaratne.

8th over Cairns and Styris collect 10 runs off a Gunaratne over to bring some respite for the Kiwis.

6th over Gunaratne strikes again as a flat-footed McMillan is caught behind.

5th over A maiden over from Vaas increases the pressure.

4th over The Kiwis are gifted four runs they desperately need as Gunaratne's throw misses the stumps and reaches the rope.

3rd over Styris and McMillan somehow avoid further damage but look unconvincing against Vaas.

2nd over After narrowly avoiding a second run out, the Black Caps now lose their captain as Fleming edges Gunaratne to the wicket-keeper.

1st over Vaas runs out Astle off his own bowling, throwing down the stumps from 10 yards out as the batsman attempts a suicidal run.

50 overs Bond is no-balled on his third delivery, and Sri Lanka survive their innings without further loss.

49 overs Arnold's replacement, Vaas, is fooled by a slower delivery from Adams and is bowled for five runs.

48 overs Bond finds an inside edge to dismiss Arnold for 12 and claim his second wicket. Four runs come off the over.

47 overs Sri Lanka's 250 comes up off the first ball.

46 overs Tillakaratne goes down with cramp in the humid conditions, and Sangakkara comes out as the runner.

45 overs Astle has his third wicket now, as Sangakkara skies a catch to mid-off.

43 overs Astle offers Tillakaratne width and the batsman strokes him for four through the covers.

42 overs Oram's comeback over costs just two and Sri Lanka will have to go some to reach 300 now.

39 overs De Silva's cameo comes to an end as a drive off Astle is hit straight to cover.

38 overs De Silva plays a trademark leg glance off Adams for four and drives him for another boundary.

36 overs Jayawardene departs for just a single, as Adams nips one back to trap him in front.

35 overs Astle strikes with an lbw as Sri Lanka finally see the back of Jayasuriya who has hit a majestic if fortunate 120 off 125 balls.

32 overs Consecutive boundaries from Jayasuriya now as Styris comes under pressure, then Tillakaratne is fortunate to snick a boundary with an inside edge to reach his fifty.

31 overs Jayasuriya reaches his century with a top-edged cut which flies fine for a boundary.

29 overs Bond is back with the Kiwis getting desperate for a breakthrough.

27 overs Vincent drops Jayasuriya off Styris, but it's a tough chance for the 'keeper standing up.

26 overs Harris drops short, Tillakaratne hammers him for four.

25 overs Styris bowls a fine opening over, costing just a single.

24 overs The hundred partnership comes up and New Zealand appear to have little idea of where the next wicket is coming from.

22 overs Harris, replacing Adams, is easily driven over long on as Tillakaratne hits him for four.

21 overs Oram continues his good work, his sox overs costing just 17 runs to date.

20 overs An increasingly wayward Adams is leg-glanced by Tillakaratne for his first boundary.

18 overs Adams over-pitches to allow Jayasuriya to carve him through the covers for four, and is then so nearly caught at third man, collecting another boundary.

17 overs Tillakaratne, who has been quiet throughout his innings, gets lucky by edging Oram just wide of gully. Oram then beats Jayasuriya twice, with nothing going the Kiwis' way.

14 overs Adams, replacing Bond at the Loch Logan End, has a nightmare start. He is carved away for three boundaries as Jayasuriya reaches his fifty off 45 balls.

13 overs Jayasuriya is running through his repertoire now, and pulls Oram effortlessly in front of square for four.

12 overs Bond is dispatched by Jayasuriya along the ground through mid-on for for four more.

11 overs Oram replaces Tuffey at the Willows End, his first over costing four.

10 overs Jayasuriya is now cutting loose, putting Bond away with a fierce square cut for four more.

9th over Tuffey feeds Bond with wide balls outside the off stump which are smashed for four. The over costs 16 in all.

7th over Jayasuriya hits Sri Lanka's first boundary with a well-timed push through the covers for four, but then gets lucky as the batsman survives an apparent catch behind.

6th over Styris leaps athletically to catch Atapattu at square leg as Bond strikes.
Sri Lanka 23-1

5th over Umpire Mallender correctly rejects a confident lbw shout by Tuffey against Atapattu.

4th over An awful throw from Oram gifts the Sri Lankans three runs in overthrows.

3rd over Atapattu off the mark with two runs through mid-wicket as Tuffey's line starts to slip leg-side and the over is worth 12 as Jayasuriya hits two shots for three.

2nd over Bond causes Atapattu a huge amount of trouble. An appeal for caught behind is turned down, while another ball does a little too much to earn the bowler an lbw.

1st over Tuffey bowls to Atapattu, finding generous swing with the first delivery, and only two runs come off the over.
