South Africa 275-9 (49 overs) lost to W Indies 278-5 by three runs
West Indies record a famous victory over South Africa in the opening game of the cricket World Cup.
They beat the hosts by three runs in a nail-biting finish at Newlands.
West Indies had made 278-5 in their 50 overs but South Africa, docked one over because of a slow over rate, fell just short as they chased a venue-record 279 to win.
There was a magnificent 116 from Brian Lara and Ricardo Powell chipped in with 41 off 18 balls.
Lance Klusener almost won it for South Africa but he was out in the final over after hitting 57 off 48 balls.
49th over: Ntini is caught by Sarwan as he tries to hit Drakes for a six, leaving South Africa needing eight runs off the final ball.
