Having just turned 21, Lawson is one of the rising young stars in the West Indies pace attack, hoping to make an impact at the World Cup.
He made his international debut in Sri Lanka in November 2001 after playing just five first-class matches.
It was the second time the talented Jamaican had visited the island after performing there in the under-19 side at the Youth World Cup, where his pace and accuracy had shone.
In 2002, he made a handful of appearances for the senior team, including his Test debut against India in October.
His efforts during the tour, which included best one-day figures of four for 57, impressed the selectors.
But in the recently concluded two-match series against minnows Bangladesh, Lawson earned even more praise when he claimed six wickets for three runs in the second Test.
