Pulasthi Gunaratne's call-up is somewhat of a surprise.

He did not make his international debut until 2002 despite beginning his first-class career back in 1994.

The player has not been shy of controversy over the years, having been called for throwing by Sri Lanka umpire D.N. Pathirana just three years ago.

He changed his style in order to comply with the rules.

Fortunes changed for the better when he made his one-day debut against Bangladesh in August 2002.

One of the reasons Gunaratne was called up for the World Cup may have something to do with his ability to bowl a containing line towards the end of an innings.
