Mark Vermeulen

Born: 2/3/79
Team: Matabeleland
ODI debut: 21/10/00
Past World Cups: -

Right-handed batsman
Right-arm off-spin bowler

Unusually for a young cricketer of great promise, Vermeulen had to wait a long time between his first and second one-day caps.

He made his debut in 2000 but it was more than two years before a second appearance followed.

That recall came midway through the December series against Pakistan when he made 79 off 82 balls.

The style of that innings was typical of an opener who is renowned as an attacking batsman, particularly strong off the back foot.

The top of the order has proved a trouble spot for Zimbabwe's selectors, but if Vermeulen can match that sort of form the selectors should have found an answer.

He is the most inexperienced member of the Zimbabwean squad, but for someone touted as a potential captain, the World Cup will bear him in good stead for the future.
