Left-handed batsman

Patel will be a useful all-round player for India's one-day side.

The Gujarati wicketkeeper's inspiration is Australian Ian Healy and he will be hoping to emulate his hero, by first impressing on cricket's biggest stage.

Consistent performances for India A and the under-19 team in the recent World Cup led to his inclusion as a back-up in the Test squad which played in England last year.

He made his Test debut against England in the summer of 2002 and despite making a duck he played in the subsequent Test series against the West Indies and more recently in New Zealand.

He is a novice at one-day level, but is included because of his youthful exuberance and cover as wicketkeeper to Rahul Dravid.

He is a powerful hitter of the ball and plays down the lower order.
