Atapattu is an exceptional one-day player.
The 32-year-old was first introduced to international cricket when he was part of the Test team to play India in a one-off match back in 1990.
However, the batsman would probably like to forget his first foray.
After enduring a pair against India, he suffered another three ducks in his next three innings.
It came as no surprise when Atapattu was dropped from the national team. But he returned in 1996 and has never looked back.
Atapattu has scored five double centuries at Test level and rattled up over 40 half-centuries at one-day level.
At the turn of the millennium, his efforts were rewarded with the vice-captaincy.
