Although he has often played second-fiddle to brasher, more glamorous batsmen, Chanderpaul is one of the West Indies' most consistent and reliable performers.
His contribution has often been forgotten in the past, which might explain why he is sometimes under-estimated by opposition and observers alike.
Back in 1994 in the fifth Test against England in Antigua it was Chanderpaul who anchored the innings for four hours to support and encourage Brian Lara on his way to a world-record 375.
There is certainly nothing aesthetically pleasing about his dogmatic batting style with his unorthodox bandy-legged stance and loose wrists.
But the man they call "Tiger" remains a valuable asset to the team, especially in one-day cricket.
In recent times he has struggled with both form and fitness, missing several key tours in the last three years, but will hope to be back to his old formidable self at this year's World Cup.
