Ganguly's talents were spotted at an early age and he was soon called up to the national team, making his one-day debut against the West Indies in 1992.
It took another four years before he was drafted into the Test squad when he performed heroics at the age of 24 with a maiden century in his debut Test in England.
The youngster also collected three wickets in the match, showing he was a useful medium pace bowler.
Ganguly has learnt to adapt his game for the one-day scene.
He has been a regular century scorer, with his highest, 183, coming against Sri Lanka in 1999 and has best bowling figures of 5-16 against Pakistan in 1997.
Ganguly graduated to the captaincy at the turn of the century but has not had an easy ride in one of the most high profile and pressurised jobs in world sport.
