Hoggard was given his one-day chance when injury sidelined others and he did not disappoint.
He made his debut in England's largely experimental squad and highly successful tour of Zimbabwe in 2001.Over the course of the 5-0 series win, Hoggard took 10 wickets and was the most economical bowler.
Of the fast bowlers selected in that squad, he is the only one going to the World Cup and is now one of England's senior bowlers.
Over the intervening year, Hoggard has gained more experience.
But he is a confidence bowler and was given rough treatment at home by both the Indian and Sri Lankan tourists in 2002.
