For those ringing the boundary at Taunton, Blackwell is a throwback to a former era.
Ian Botham used to delight the Somerset crowds, and that responsibility has now fallen squarely on the shoulders of the bludgeoning Blackwell.
He is a powerful batsman who came to prominence after consistent performances throughout both 2001 and 2002.
That run included some memorable performances in domestic one-day cricket that were enough to persuade the selectors to call him up for the ICC Champions Trophy.
An innings of 82 off 68 balls against India proved that he could carry that form onto the international stage.
He is also capable of holding down an end mid-innings with his left-arm spin.
