Scoring a Test century on your debut is a rare and treasured thing - and that is exactly what Styris did.
Batting at number seven, he struck 107 against a tough West Indies attack that included Pedro Collins, Cameron Cuffy and Carl Hooper in the middle of 2002.
His innings helped New Zealand draw the match and secure their first series victory in West Indies.
Styris' one-day debut came a couple of years before that against India - however he managed only one run.
But his form has improved and he is now regarded as one of New Zealand's most consistent all-rounders at both Test and one-day level.
He has over 40 one-day wickets including a national best haul of 6-25 which also came against the West Indies.
