Shane Bond is the most exciting fast bowler in New Zealand but it is only in the last year that his talents have been rewarded with an international call-up at both Test and one-day level.

A bad back has hindered his career, but ever since returning from police training college, he seems to have overcome that problem.

Bond's first taste of international cricket came when he was called up to the New Zealand 'A' squad for their tour to India.

Many queried the decision to take the paceman, but he proved doubters wrong by helping the Black Caps to victory in the Buchi Babu tournament.

He followed that up by being drafted into the senior squad and finished as the leading wicket-taker in his debut one-day series against Australia and South Africa last year.

The 27-year-old was signed by Warwickshire as a replacement for South Africa captain Shaun Pollock in August 2002.
