De Groot hails from Ontario but carved out his career in the West Indies.

He developed his game in Guyana and debuted against the touring Australians at the age of 19 during the 1994/1995 season.

De Groot was selected by the West Indies at youth level and became a regular opener for Guyana.

Despite playing over 30 matches he failed to make a big enough impact to force his way into the West Indies senior squad.

Instead, De Groot opted to play for his country of birth in the ICC Trophy in 2001.

The Ontario star's decision ultimately paid off helping Canada to a third-place finish and a berth in the 2003 World Cup.
