The recent success of British cycling owes much to the Manchester Velodrome.

It opened for the World Track Cycling Championships in 1996 and has since been an invaluable training facility - the impressive cycling medal haul at the 2000 Olympics underlined that fact.

It was built as a joint venture between the English Sports Council, Manchester City Council and the British Cycling Federation and plans proceeded despite the city's failed first bid to host the Olympics.

It staged the World Track Cycling Championships again two years ago and has also hosted other sports such as boxing and basketball.
