Post-competition verdict:

Before the Commonwealth Games only Linford Christie, Sally Gunnell and Daley Thompson had won gold at all the major events.

Commonwealth gold was the only major title to have eluded Edwards before Manchester.

But a massive leap of 17.86m put him among Englandís athletics elite and was sufficient to hold off the threat of Phillips Idowu.

Gold at the 2004 Olympic Games still remains a possibility.
