Post-competition verdict:

The Namibian arrived at the Games targeting a possible double gold in the 100m and 200m.

But he immediately made the decision to pull out of the shorter sprint to safeguard against injury and ensure gold in the 200.

At 34, many had argued that Fredericks was well past his best but he was unchallenged en route to a sensational victory in a time of 20.06 seconds.

The result was all the more remarkable after a series of crippling injuries over the last year.
