Sport in Nauru comes down to one man – Marcus Stephen.
The weightlifter has picked up three medals in each of his country’s appearances in the Games – gold and two silvers in 1990 and three golds in both 1994 and 1998.
Nauru sent 10 athletes to Kuala Lumpur but Stephen is their only medallist so far.
Did you know?
Australian Rules Football is one of the most popular sports in Nauru but there is only one pitch on the island.
A lack of rain means no grass grows, so the playing surface is phosphate dust laid over crushed dirt – with the pitch markings in oil.
Unsurprisingly the Nauru AFA’s slogan is “The hard men of football”.
