The Kuala Lumpur Games were Mozambique’s first and, after sending a team of eight athletes, they came away with two medals.

Both came in the same event, with Maria Mutola and Argentina Paulino taking gold and silver in the women’s 800m.

Mozambique had to find a new venue for their Cosafa Castle Cup soccer match with South Africa in 2001 after they were told their 50,000 capacity Machava Stadium was unavailable.
