The Manchester Games will be the 10th time Kenya have competed.

Their first appearance came in 1954 and they have won 128 medals, including 49 golds, since then.

Distance running and boxing are their usual strengths but weightlifting has also brought them much success.

In 1998, a team of 108 came home with 16 medals – seven of them gold.

Kenya’s male runners achieved a clean sweep of middle and long-distance track events in the 1998 Kuala Lumpur Games.

Japeth Kimutai (800m), Laban Rotich (1500m), Daniel Komen (5,000m), Simon Maina (10,000m) and John Kosgei (steeplechase) all triumphed.
