Pole Vault

Women have been competing in the pole vault since 1911, but they have only been in top level competitions over the last decade.

So, many of the discipline's highlights over the years have come in the men's event, courtesy of athletes such as Ukraine's Sergei Bubka.

Basically, vaulters have to charge down a runway with a fibreglass pole in their hands, slot it in a hole just in front of the bar and then power themselves over that bar.
