Australia's Justin Norris produced a fantastic freestyle to win the men's 400m individual medley.

And there was a special ovation too for England's Adrian Turner, who claimed bronze just two years after an illness nearly killed him.

"I kind of feel it's meant to be"

Norris trailed Canada's Brian Lawrence Johns during the butterfly, backstroke and breaststroke sections of the race.

But in the final 100m, Norris moved up a gear to pass Johns and touch home in a time of four minutes 16.95 seconds.

It was the Australian's second gold of the Games following his win in the 200m butterfly.

Johns took second in 4:17.41 while Turner produced a storming finish to take bronze in 4:18.75 - five seconds faster than his previous best.

Turner, the brother of popular British television presenter Beverly Turner, was close to dying just before 2000 when he suffered a problem with his immune system.

He told the BBC how important winning a bronze was considering what had happened to him.

"I kind of feel it's meant to be. Two years ago I needed blood transfusionsand all sorts," he said.

"It was horrible. My family and friends and my girlfriend have been amazing.I am just so happy - it makes it all worthwhile.

"A nice big medal is what it's all about.

"I worked pretty hard this morning in the heat but the crowd and the occasionjust raised my game tonight."
