Price joy in 100m backstroke

England's Sarah Price produced a world-class performance to win the 100m backstroke final.

Price, who began the race as favourite, blitzed the field to record a new Commonwealth record time of 1:1.06.

"I had to keep focusing and keep strong"

Australia's Dyana Calub finished in 1.01.86 and compatriot Giaan Rooney took bronze in 1:02.22.

A tearful Price said how much she had improved since her poor performance at the Sydney Olympics.

"I've showed everyone I can perform at major games," she said. "I really enjoy it now and mentally I am so much stronger."

Price said she had to concentrate hard to keep Calub at bay.

"I knew the Australian girl would be up on the 50. I had to keep focusing and keep strong," said the Englishwoman.
