Mutola defends crown

Maria Mutola successfully defended her 800m title at the City of Manchester Stadium with an impressive final sprint.

The 29-year-old world, Olympic and Commonwealth champion comfortably kept up with a fast early pace before making her bid for gold on the final straight.

The Mozambique athlete won in a time of 1m57.35s, shaving three-tenths-of-a-second off her previous Commonwealth Games record.

England's Jo Fenn set a fast early pace in a bid to break down Mutola but to no avail and fell off the front in the dying stages.

She smashed her personal best but it was not enough to battle for the medals.

Diane Cummins, of Canada, took silver more than a second behind Mutola. Namibia's Agnes Samaria won bronze.
