South Africa's Frantz Kruger broke the Commonwealth Games discus record he set in the qualifiers with a throw of 66.39m to win gold.
The 27-year-old medical student, who won silver four years ago and Olympic bronze in 2000, held off Canada's Jason Tunks who won bronze in 1998.Tunks won silver with 62.61m, with England's Bob Weir claiming bronze with a best of 59.24m.
Weir's success came 20 years after he was crowned hammer champion.
Afterwards he said he had thought about retiring after winning the gold medal four years ago.
"The fact that the Games were in Manchester kept me motivated and going for another four years."
