Pompey denies plucky Scot

Aliann Pompey has won a thrilling 400m final at the Commonwealth Games.

The Guyana athlete clocked a time of 51.63, but had to dig deep to fend off Scottish newcomer to the distance Lee McConnell, who finished in 51.68.

McConnell, who only switched from the high jump a year ago, had the fastest finish and snatched the silver medal from defending champion Sandie Richards, of Jamaica.

Catherine Murphy, of Wales, and Bahamian Christine Amertil had been leading after the final bend, but both flagged to finish out of contention.

Afterwards, McConnell told BBC Sport she was delighted with her performance: "I'm really surprised - I didn't think I would get a medal."
