Price leads English charge
Sarah Price on her way to a Commonwealth Games record in the 200m backstroke heats
Price has broken five Games records this week

Sarah Price led an English clean sweep as she smashed her own 200m backstroke Commonwealth Gold record to win her second swimming gold.

Price, from Barnet, led home team-mates Jo Fargus and Katy Sexton.

The 23-year-old then added a bronze medal in the 50m sprint to complete a marvellous week in the pool.

Rebecca Cooke also played her part in a remarkable night for English swimmers by taking gold in the 400m freestyle.

Price was delighted to have completed a personal double.

"I was on a high after the 200 - that's what got me through to be honest.

"Bronze in the 50 is great. I went in there fifth and come out third with a British record too. I'm very happy with that," she said.

Having broken the 12-year-old record in the 200m semi-finals, Price slashed a further second off the time in the final.

She was ahead of world record pace after a blistering first 50m, but could not quite sustain that sort of pace and had to settle for a time of two minutes 10.58 seconds.

Price told the BBC: "I was really nervous before that because these girls are so tough but we got a one-two-three - what more could you ask for?"

Cooke, a winner in her favoured 800m event 24 hours earlier, had enough strength to see off the persistent challenge of Australia's Elka Graham in the 400m freestyle.

"I felt so comfortable at 200m and I knew I could hold the others off. I'm absolutely ecstatic," she told the BBC.

Jamaica's Janelle Atkinson won a tight race for bronze.
