![]() Hackett storms to victory
Hackett was a class apart from the rest of the field
Grant Hackett eased to the Commonwealth men's 1500m freestyle title on the final day of competition. The Australian, the world champion and world record holder, took a two-length lead after the first 50m and won eventually by about 40m in a time of 14 minutes 54.29 seconds. The action behind Hackett was the race most of the Aquatic Centre crowd were concentrating on as Scotland's Graeme Smith and Australia's Craig Stevens fought for the silver medal. Going into the final 50m Smith had the edge and then just sprinted away from Stevens to take second in 15:07.19, while the Australian had to settle for bronze in a time of 15:09.24. |
