Baker charges to gold

Zoe Baker has won the women's 50m breaststroke Commonwealth title with a convincing display.

She missed beating her own world record, which she set 24 hours earlier, by a mere 0.03 seconds.

She was in the lead from the off and opened up clear water between herself and the rest of the field, finishing in a time of 30.60 seconds.

"It was a wonderful feeling to see everyone raving and on my side," the New Zealand-based swimmer said of the celebratory mood in the Aquatics Centre.

South Africa's Sarah Poewe finished in the silver medal position more than a second adrift, with Tarnee White of Australia in bronze.

Australia's Leisel Jones, the Olympic and world 100mbreaststroke silver medallist, had to settle for fourth place.

"Tonight was all about bringing home the gold and not about a world record," Baker continued.

"I felt the pressure because, after all, it was a Commonwealth final and I felt very tense."
