Squash stars shine in Kuala Lumpur

Although squash has been around for years, the popular sport had to wait until 1998 to make its Commonwealth Games debut.

Australia and England grabbed four out of the five gold medals on offer in Kuala Lumpur, but it was Scotland that provided the real show-stopper with Peter Nicol's win in the men's singles.

Nicol edged Canadian rival Jonathon Power in a thrilling finale (3-9 9-2 9-1 2-9 9-2) to claim Scotland's first gold of the Games.

Australia's Michelle Martin showed her dominance of women's squash with two golds at Kuala Lumpur.

The powerful second seed demolished top-seeded compatriot Sarah Fitz-Gerald, 9-0 9-6 9-5, to win gold in the women's singles.

She then joined Craig Rowland to upstage favourites Simon Parke and Suzanne Horner of England, 15-4 15-7, in the mixed doubles.

But England came back strongly to deny their southern hemisphere adversaries in the other doubles finals.

Fourth seeds Paul Johnson and Mark Chaloner picked up England's first squash gold by thrashing third seeds Rodney Eyles and Byron Davis 15-8 15-4 in the men's doubles.

In the other doubles event, Sue Wright and Cassie Jackman beat Australians Robyn Cooper and Rachael Grinham 15-10 15-12 to take the women's title.
