New Zealand shatter record

New Zealand are among the early favourites for gold

New Zealand broke their own Commonwealth Games netball record by thrashing Canada 101-17.

The Canadians had no answer to the pool favourites' full-court defensive pressure and the goal shooting of Daneka Wipiiti, who scored 39 points.

The Games' previous biggest win was New Zealand's 94-21 hammering of Wales in 1998, while the Kiwis' 92-16 defeat of Sri Lanka in the same tournament was the competition's record margin of victory.

Canada had also crashed 86-27 to England on Friday and the hosts followed that win with another big victory over Sri Lanka.

Despite rotating their squad and making further changes at half-time, Fiona Murtagh's team still had the cohesion to dispatch Sri Lanka 75-34.

With Karen Aspinall dominating the game and goal shooter Alex Astle picking up where she left off on Friday, England did the damage in the third quarter, when they built up a 31-point lead.

Earlier at the MEN Arena, Jamaica maintained their 100% record in the tournament with a slick 66-55 win over South Africa.

The Caribbean side took control of the contest in the first quarter but had to worker harder for victory than in their opening Pool B defeat of Barbados.

Goal attacker Simone Forbes proved a real handful for the South African back-line, while shooter Elaine Davis missed little all afternoon and finished with a haul of 46 goals.

In the final match of the day, world champions Australia made a slow start against Barbados before eventually prevailing 75-28.

Barbados scored four early goals but the Aussies soon dominated.
