Scottish trio win bowls gold
David Heddle bowls in Scotland's narrow win against Wales
David Heddle helped Scotland to a narrow win
Scotland have won their first bowls gold medal of this Commonwealth Games at a wet and overcast Heaton Park.

David Heddle, Ivan Prior and John Robertson battled valiantly in rain-soaked conditions to triumph over Wales in the men's triples for the physically disabled.

The brave Scots recorded a tense 12-8 victory over the Welsh trio who failed to recover from a slow start.

The Scots took control of the match early on and Kevin George Woolmore, Derek Dowling and John Gronow were unable to make up the deficit for the Welsh who had to settle for silver.

Australia and Malaysia both took bronze.

However, Scotland duo Margaret Russell and Joyce Lindores were unable to give their country a second medal after their heavy 21-5 defeat at the hands of South Africa's Ellen Cawker and Jill Hackland.

Meanwhile, England's Lynne Whitehead and Amy Gowshall took a huge step to matching the gold feat of the fours team.

They assured themselves of a bronze after moving easily into the semi-finals with a 16-7 win over Northern Ireland's Donna McNally and Barbara Cameron.

Joanna Weale and Anwen Butten lifted Welsh spirits, guaranteeing them a third bronze, with a 24-10 triumph over Jersey's Alison Birch and Sheil Syvret in the quarter-final.

They now progress into this afternoon's semi-finals.
