Games a big hit on TV

Millions watched as Daniel Caines pipped Wales' Matt Elias
The Commonwealth Games have proved a huge success for BBC Sport, with TV viewers watching in their millions.

Almost 10m tuned in to watch Sunday's closing ceremony on BBC One, with figures peaking at 9.7m.

The programme averaged 8m viewers and grabbed an audience share of 40.7%.

Figures grew steadily throughout the BBC coverage, with almost a million more tuning into the closing ceremony than the opening one.

The climax of the track and field competition proved the greatest draw, with a peak audience of 7.5m watching England's 4x400m men's team clinch gold.

Crowd favourite Paula Radcliffe also helped pull in the viewers, with 7.0m watching her grab the first track gold medal of her career in the women's 5000m.

Dave Gordon, BBC Sport Executive Editor of the Commonwealth Games was delighted with the record-breaking figures.

"The BBC is proud to have played its part in the success of the Games and the record television audiences have been a real reward for the home nations athletes, as well as the BBC team," he said.

Manchester City Councillor Richard Leese
"It surpassed all expectations"
