Cycling
ATHLETICS

100m
Kim Collins, of St Kitts and Nevis, claimed the men's gold, but English co-favourites Mark Lewis-Francis and Dwain Chambers were both injured in the final.

Lewis-Francis pulled up in agony after the line and was stretchered off the track, while Chambers limped away.

Bahamian Debbie Ferguson won the women's gold medal with a time of 10.91secs, a new Games record.

3,000m steeplechase
Stephen Cherono led a Kenyan clean sweep of the medals.

Discus
South African Frantz Kruger won the men's discus, with English veteran Robert Weir collecting a bronze medal.

Heptathlon
Australia's Jane Jamieson held off a challenge from team-mate Kylie Wheeler to win the gold medal.

Men's 400m
England's Daniel Caines broke 45 seconds for the first time as he landed his semi-final.

Women's 400m
Scotland's Lee McConnell ran a lifetime best of 51.29 secs to win her semi and reach the final, with defending champion Sandie Richards struggling through in fourth.

Women's 400m hurdles
Australia's Jana Pittman ran a personal best of 54.14 seconds to qualify fastest for Sunday's final.

The 19-year-old's time was the quickest ever run in the women's event by a teenager.

Men's 800m
Botswana's Otukile Lekote was the fastest qualifier for the semi-finals with a time of 1:47.68.

Defending champion Japhet Kimutai won his heat in 1:49.62 with his Kenyan team-mate Joseph Mutua and South Africa's Mbulaeni Mulaudzi other heat winners.

Northern Ireland's James McIlroy, English duo Joel Kidger and Neil Speaight and Wales' Matthew Shone were among the qualifiers but England's 1992 Olympic finalist Curtis Robb missed out.

Women's 800m
Mozambique's Maria Mutola led the way in the first round of heats.

The Olympic, world and Commonwealth champion was the fastest qualifier for Sunday's semi-finals in 2:01.87, with Scotland's Susan Scott finishing impressively behind her.

Kenya's Faith Macharia, Nigeria's Grace Ebor, Diane Cummins of Canada and Namibia's Agnes Samaria also won heats.

English pair Charlotte Moore and Jo Fenn and Emma Davies of Wales were among the other qualifiers.

Decathlon
Jamaica's Bernard Claston extended his lead after the high jump, the fourth event, with Scotland's Jamie Quarry in third.


SHOOTING

England's shooting medal haul at Bisley was headed by Michael Gault and Nicholas Baxter, who triumphed in the 10m air pistol pairs.

India's Sameer Ambekar and Abhinav Bindra were the comfortable winners in the men's 10m air rifle pairs.


AQUATICS
England's Pete Waterfield won the 10m highboard title, with team-mate Leon Taylor in second spot.

Canada maintained their monopoly of synchronised swimming titles at the Commonwealth Games with victory in the duets.

Australian Irina Lashko landed her second gold, winning the 3m springboard event.


CYCLING

Canadian speedskater Clara Hughes made a triumphant return to cycling by winning the road time trial at Rivington.


OTHER SPORTS

Hockey
Defending champions Australia made a strong start to the defence of their men's hockey title as they crushed rivals New Zealand 6-1.

South Africa were booed after thrashing Barbados 10-1, while Wales were held to a 1-1 draw by Canada.

Pakistan cruised to a cosy 3-0 win over England.

Gymnastics
The English women almost matched their male counterparts, taking silver in the team gymnastics behind hot favourites Australia.
