![]() England dominate finals
Morris missed out on a final spot in the lightweight division
The England success story continued inside the boxing ring on Thursday as two more fighters successfully negotiated their semi-final bouts. Darran Langley became the fourth home fighter to reach a final thanks to his one-point victory over Malaysia's Zamzai Mohammed in the light-flyweight.
Compatriots David Dolan, Paul Smith and Darren Baker had already qualified from the afternoon semi-finals at the Manchester Evening News Arena. "It was a very close fight, the hardest I've had at these Commonwealth Games," said Langley. "I knew I was down going in to the last round. I gave it my all in the fourth and the crowd got behind me and that helped." There was disappointment for local lad Andrew Morris in the lightweight and Mark Moran in the bantamweight.
Kane faces Andrew Singh Kooner in Saturday's final after the Canadian beat Lesotho's Ezekiel Letuka in the best fight of the night. Wales' only hope for gold rests on Jamie Arthur's shoulders. He beat Botswana's Gilbert Khunwane to set-up a lightweight final against the impressive Zimba. "I'm absolutely ecstatic," said Arthur. "I'll give all I've got on Saturday to see if I can do it for Wales." The welterweight contest for gold will be between Daniel Geale of Australia and South Africa's Kwanele Zulu. Bronze goes to the losing semi-finalists Kiwi Daniel Colding and Ali Nuumbembe of Namibia.
A count-back was needed to find the winner between Michael Walchuk and Paul Miller in the second middleweight semi-final after both scored 25 points. Australian Miller won through, leaving Walchuk to take Canada's third bronze of the day. Trinidad's heavyweight Kerston Manswell enjoyed the most comprehensive victory of the night with a 20-6 verdict over Scotland's Andrew Young. Jason Douglas, who became Canada's fourth finalist after stopping New Zealand's Shane Cameron in the second round, awaits him in the final. |
