Doubles glory for England
Simon Archer and Jo Goode
Archer and Goode took bronze at the 2000 Olympics

England's Simon Archer and Jo Goode added Commonwealth gold to the Olympic bronze they won in Sydney with victory over Malaysia's Choon Chew Eng and Chin Hui Ei.

Archer and Goode bounced back from a first game whitewash to triumph 0-7 7-5 7-3 7-3 and defend the mixed doubles title they won in Kuala Lumpur.

And Goode admitted that fatigue had been a factor in the pair's poor start to the match.

"It felt like we were still in bed in the first set," said Goode.

"We've had a really, really tough schedule and it was catching up on us.

"I don't think we played our best mixed ever out there, but it was down to experience and pure mental ability."

The gold medal will go some way to making up for the pair's bitter disappointment at failing to make the Olympic final two years ago.

Goode has since given birth to her second child and needed time away from the sport, while Archer battled with a career-threatening knee injury.

He did not compete at all in 2001 and said the crowd in Manchester played a big part in lifting them for the final.

"We've been through a hell of a lot in the last few months and we wanted to prove to ourselves that we could come back," said Archer.

"We've supported each other all the way and the crowd have been great.

"They've always pulled for us and cheered us on and that's what makes today so special."
