Colin's bad night at the office
Colin Jackson's defeat was the first big shock of the Games so far, and I'm really disappointed for him. All the big name athletes want to perform at their best in front of crowds like we're getting here, but Colin didn't do that.
What makes it worse is that it was a basic mistake that he made. He doesn't need me to tell him that. When you're as experienced an athlete as Colin, you know how to race under all conditions and under whatever expectations there are. It's not something he'll look back on with any pleasure. Nathan Morgan, on the other hand, will be delighted with his gold medal in the long jump. He's been competing internationally for a while without ever scaling the heights, but this was his reward. Chris Tomlinson won't be happy at all. Ever since he broke the British record earlier this year, he's been gearing himself up for this. But you have to be able to produce the goods on the night, and he failed to do so.
He's only a young lad. He'll come back older and wiser; there's a lot of promise and talent in that gangly frame. At least he has the Europeans next week to focus on and try to get back to the sort of form he was enjoying earlier in the season. Susan Jones' silver in the high jump will be a popular one. I was chatting to her afterwards, and it reminded me that she is one of the nicest people in British athletics. Hestrie Cloete is world class and was never going to get beaten. And Susan is capable of going higher than she did. But this was her first senior medal and she outperformed athletes who have better PBs than she does. I enjoyed the women's 10,000m too. It was never going to scale the same heights as the men's, but it was still a cracking race. Until the explosive last 200m it looked like going to the wire, just as the men's did. And for Liz Yelling to knock 30 seconds off her previous personal best was a performance we should all applaud. Elsewhere, it's hotting up nicely in the 1500m. Anthony Whiteman and Kelly Holmes both looked good in their semi-finals. There's medals available in Wednesday's finals. |
