Cloete takes high jump gold
Cloete set a new Commonwealth Games record
South African Hestrie Cloete justified her status as pre-competition favourite by winning the women's high jump with a Games record leap of 1.96m. Susan Jones produced a leap of 1.90m to take silver ahead of Canada's Nicole Forrester (1.87m). Cloete's mark of 1.96m broke the record set by Australia's Alison Inverarity in 1994 by two centimetres. Cloete last year became the first South African to win a world title and came second at the Sydney Olympics in 2000. |
