Double for Deakes
Nathan Deakes
Deakes triumphed in the 20km walk on Sunday

Australia's Nathan Deakes collected his second gold medal of the Commonwealth Games with victory in the 50km walk.

The 24-year-old smashed the Games record by 18 minutes, crossing the line in three hours 52 minutes and 40 seconds.

New Zealand's Craig Barrett took silver while Tim Berrett of Canada finished third.

Deakes was also triumphant in the 20km walk on Sunday.

"I'm lost for words," he enthused. "It's a great feeling to win gold and to win two at the same games is a dream come true."

Deakes' performance was all the more impressive given that the athletes had to endure a 40-minute thunderstorm midway through the race.

Controversially disqualified

England's best medal hope Steve Hollier found the pace hard going and finished in sixth.

Redhill-born athlete Mark Easton was controversially disqualified after just over an hour of the race.

The 39-year-old was well adrift at the back of the field when the judges showed him a third and final red warning for failing to keep both feet grounded.

Australian Liam Murphy was also disqualified for the same reason while Deakes and bronze medallist received red cards during the race.
