![]() Bownes gold shocks Jackson
Colin Jackson was in shock after the race
South Africa's Shaun Bownes produced a major upset to take Commonwealth Games gold in the 110m hurdles ahead of Colin Jackson. Bownes' time of 13.35 seconds was good enough to see him finish 0.04 seconds ahead of Jackson, after the Welshman failed to recover from hitting the first hurdle.
"I absolutely slammed the first hurdle and from there on in I was just chasing," said Jackson. "I was just way too close to it. I was thinking 'keep your form and just run through the field'. "It was a total shock. I was just so close to that first hurdle it cost me the whole thing. "As you see I just came out of the blocks and I knew straight away I was close. Once I got that done I was hurdling quite smoothly and that's what cheesed me off.
"But it's another one (medal) to add to the collection." Defending champion Tony Jarrett of England also had a terrible start and failed to take a medal, as Jamaica's Maurice Wignall held him off for bronze. Bownes admitted he was surprised to lead the race throughout, and had been expecting Jackson to challenge at the line. "Halfway through the race I panicked and started looking around," said the 31-year-old. "When I couldn't see Colin I realised something was wrong. I just kept going for the line." |
